My EPIK Life

FILIPINO BORN, NEW ZEALAND RAISED, KOREA LIVING

These are just my updates on a not so new chapter in my life, which is teaching English in South Korea through the EPIK (English Programme in Korea). I'm currently based in Gunsan, Jeonbuk province (Jeollabuk-do) and am about to start on my second year here.

I wanted a change and thought this would be an awesome thing to do....I think everyone should do something like this in their lifetime! It's such a great experience and my first year was nothing less than amazing.

This blog doesn't only serve as a memory bank for me but also as a way to help others that are going to, or are planning on, making the same footsteps as me.

As my favourite saying goes:
"In twenty years you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the things you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover"- Mark Twain.

Singing the alphabet has never been so entertaining. These are my 1st and 2nd graders at my country school- Keumam Elementary (금암초등학교). This is what greets me every Friday morning.

Cambodia and Vietnam are just memories now…back to the snow and cold.

Today is the last day of my 6th grade winter camp and I have enjoyed every single day! To be honest I was almost dreading my 6th graders and was a little anxious as to how camp would go. Don’t get me wrong, outside of class these kids are an awesome bunch but once you get them into a classroom, especially for English, some turn into the most unresponsive, naughty students ever! That is a generalisation though; there are a few that are not like this.

However, with my summer camp the numbers fluctuated each day which made it hard to work out games or activities when not all members of a team are there. When it came to asking questions to the class it was like pulling blood from a stone. But this camp, they have been amazing! Even though it’s the same students answering most times, you can see the other team members on the table (those that are a shyer) whispering answers so I know they know them, which is alright with me. In games and activities, they have all participated and the best part is that they all turn up each day.

So all in all, this has been an awesome winter camp for both my 5th and 6th grades. Last day today, then off on my vacation on Sunday.

Pics of this camp will go up soon.

Just a little more of my Christmas in Gunsan.

My first White Christmas and my first Christmas away from my family and close friends. This was definitely a memorable one thanks to some of my Gunsan fambams.

Spent Christmas Eve dancing, listening to Christmas songs and watching a Christmas movie. It also started snowing so decided to play in the snow for a little bit.

Christmas day was spent opening presents, having a delicious brunch, snoozing, skyping and ended with dressing up a little and having dinner at our local Italian restaurant Paradiso, which has awesome views over Lake Eunpa.

‘Twas the day before Christmas….and we have turned the English room into a theatre.
